Henri Cassiers was a Flemish artist from the 1870s to the 1940s. He was best-known for his illustrations, posters, wall plates and postcards, which often with a maritime them. Cassiers studied at the academies of Brussels and Saint-Josse-ten-Noode, and soon developed his own style and theme, focusing on maritime scenes and city and village views, both in Flanders and in the Netherlands. Between 1886 and 1893 he illustrated many popular weekly magazines such as De Vlaamsche Patriot, Le Globe Illustre and L'Illustration Europeenne. In addition, illustrations by him appeared in various books, including those by Camille Mauclair, Emile Verhaeren, Cyriel Buysse and Jean d'Ardenne. Cassiers' style also lended itself perfectly for publicity purposes, and tourist sites and shipping companies in particular regularly hired him. He became known for his work for the Red Star Line, and he made many posters, postcards, menus and other advertising material for this travel/shipping company. He passed away in 1944 at the age of 86.

Important Added Info: Note that we have never auctioned this Belgian poster before! It is an art print that is printed on a high quality paper stock, but it can be rolled, and it is dated 1903 in the bottom center of the image. Note that the fisherman in the image are drinking jenever, which was a juniper-flavored traditional liquor in the Netherlands, very popular in that country at that time!

Condition: very good to fine. The poster was never folded. It has slight darkening in the outer edges of the blank borders.
