An Autographed Letter (measures 8 1/2" x 11"; 1 page) (Learn More) Josef von Sternberg (born Jonas Sternberg) was an Austrian writer and director from the 1920s to the 1950s. His family moved to New York City when he was young. He idolized Erich von Stroheim (and added a "von" to his name, and Europeanized the spelling of his first name, in tribute to his idol), and made many wonderful movies, including several with Marlene Dietrich, who he pretty much "discovered", and was integral in making her into a superstar. Some of his films include: Blue Angel, Shanghai Express (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film), Morocco (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film), and The Scarlet Empress. He passed away in 1969 at the age of 75. Important Added Info: Note that this item has been personally autographed (signed) by Josef von Sternberg! He thanks David Mallery for sending him his book that talks about von Sternberg, and von Sternberg chastises him for not mentioning his own book in the book he just wrote (see our image). It comes with the envelope that Mr. von Sternberg sent it in, which has his return address on it. Note that this letter comes from the estate of David Mallery. He was a professor of cinematography at Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia, from the 1960s into the 1990s. He was a founding member of the AFI (American Film Institute), and a member of the Motion Picture Academy. He was a film critic who wrote many reviews for many publications, and hosted a TV show where he interviewed directors, actors, and others involved in the film industry. Over the years, he developed both working and close personal relationships with many actors, actresses, and directors, including Frank Capra, Charlton Heston and others. We are currently auctioning 24 letters from directors and actors to Mr. Mallery. Almost all of them are written "from one friend to another", and are in no way "stock" replies to "fan letters", and all are personally signed, and some are entirely or partially handwritten.
