An Original Vintage Stage Play Script (measures 8 1/2" x 11" [22 x 28 cm], 98 pages) (Learn More)

West Side Story, the 1957 - 1959 Jerome Robbins Broadway musical stage play (with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim; loosely based on the tragedy 'Romeo and Juliet' by William Shakespeare) starring Carol Lawrence (as Maria), Larry Kert (as Tony), Sonya Wilde (who became Maria after Carol Lawrence left), Chita Rivera (as Anita), Art Smith, Lee Becker, Hank Brunjes (as Diesel and Riff), and Muriel Bentley (who became Anita after Chita Rivera left). Of course, this play became a movie in 1961, and as usual, Hollywood would not cast the Broadway leads (because they weren't nationally known), and instead, they cast Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer in the lead roles, even though both had to be dubbed!
Important Added Info: The name "Hank Brunjes" is written on the cover of the script, and Hank Brunjes was an original cast member when the show opened. He played Diesel when the show opened, who became "Ice" in the 1961 movie, although there was an Ice character in 1957. On November 30, 1957 Mickey Calin, who played Riff, was unable to perform for two nights, and Mr. Brunjes, who was Riff's understudy, took over the role of Riff for those two performances, and at some point, he had been given a copy of the script with his name and "RIFF" written on the cover, so that he could learn the part he would have to play if Mr. Calin was unavailable! He saved the script and the pay envelope he was given that notes that he was paid $126.83 for these two performances, and the pay envelope has "2 shows as RIFFF" typed below where his pay information is typed (see our image). He also saved two 8x10s that show him on stage with other cast members. Our consignor purchased this years ago from Brunjes' family, and he does not have a certificate of authenticity, but this is certainly Mr. Brunjes' personal script, pay envelope, and photos. Note that this script was written by Stephen Sondheim, Arthur Laurents, and Leonard Bernstein.

Note: We have 12 images of this script, but due to a space limitation, only TEN of the 12 images are displayed above. However, there is a "supersize" link to the right of those images that lets you see the other 2.

Condition: very good. There are a few faint stains on the green areas of the cover, but otherwise, the script is in pretty nice condition. See our multiple images to get a good sense of the exact condition of this script.
