An Original Vintage Campaign Book (measures 9 1/2" x 12 1/2" [24 x 32 cm]; 50 pages) (Learn More)

Paramount 1928-29, the 1929 Paramount campaign book ("The Whole Show Program for 1928-29"), sent to theater owners to encourage them to show Paramount movies. The book includes 46 pages with one-page and half-page spreads on Paramount's upcoming movies and stars. Some of the movies and stars advertised include Wings (with sound!), The Wedding March (with Erich von Stroheim), four different movies with Clara Bow, Dirigible (directed by William Wellman), The Canary Murder Case (with William Powell), The First Kiss (with Gary Cooper), and many more! There is a eight-page section that advertises Paramount short subjects, with a great illustrated ad for Krazy Kat and Max Fleischer's Inkwell Imps cartoons, and a cool tiny "Stars of Tomorrow" section (which includes an image of Louise Brooks!), plus much more! Note that, because Paramount at this time was one of the very leading studios, and had many of the biggest name stars and directors, and also had lots of money to spend, they made lots of great movies this year, and they also were proposing many unbelievable movies that never got made (see some of the examples above; perhaps it was because the stars became too famous too quickly to make so many movies, or maybe it was because of the Great Depression, but this book has lots of never-made movies that one could only dream of!). Sometimes Paramount did not use as much full-color artwork as the lesser studios, because they had so many great stars, but in the case of THIS campaign book, they commissioned some of the very finest full-color art I have ever seen in any campaign book! We have included images of the cover of the book and six of the interior pages (and we did not make a big effort to find the best ones, and we really wish we could have pictured them all!).

Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned three examples of this campaign book, and only one in the last 12 years (and it sold for $447).

Condition: fair to good. The book at some point came in contact with water, which stained the bottom of all pages. Most of them are not at all discolored, although a few are, but almost all are rippled at the bottom, and the staining gets progressively greater the further into the book you go. Fortunately, it is most noticeable in an 8-page text section at the back of the book by a salesman titled "Why I Am Proud of Selling Paramount Pictures". The 12 pages before that have some light red staining scattered over those pages, but the pages earlier in the book have very little of the red staining. Someone made a few pencil notations on some of the ads about who the actors were. Obviously, this extremely rare book has some very clear defects, so please do not bid on it (and look at our super-sized images) before placing a bid.
