An Original Vintage Theatrical Trade-Ad (measures 9 1/4" x 12 1/4" [23 x 31 cm]; 6 pages on one sheet) (Learn More) W. Somerset Maugham's Christmas Holiday, the 1944 Robert Siodmak romantic love triangle crime film noir ("Durbin... In her most dramatic glory!"; "Lovely!"; "Flaming"; "Brilliant!"; "Dramatic..."; "Love... Was her crime! Love... Was her punishment!"; "Durbin... In her most dramatic glory!"; "As written for the screen by Herman E. Mankiewicz"; based on the novel by W. Somerset Maugham; with music by Irving Berlin; about a troubled young woman who thinks she met the man of her dreams, and they marry, but before long, she learns that he is both a psychopath and a degenerate gambler, and their lives really spiral downward after he kills his bookie) starring Deanna Durbin, Gene Kelly, Richard Whorf, Dean Harens, Gladys George, Gale Sondergaard, and David Bruce. Note that both Durbin and Kelly made a major attempt to break out of their stereotyped characters they had played in the past, and both of them had dramatic roles in this ultra downbeat film noir movie, and Kelly played a psychopathic murderer (perhaps it was because Universal did not want viewers to expect a "Gene Kelly musical" that they did not depict Kelly on the style D one-sheet poster at all!) NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: From the 1920s on, studios would create elaborate trade ads, often in full color, and often using the finest artists of the day. They would run these ads in their studio yearbooks and exhibitor magazines, and they would also print those trade ads separately and mail them individually to theater owners, trying to get them to book that specific movie. Sometimes those books and magazines are separated and the ads, which now greatly resemble the individually printed trade ads, are sold individually. The trade ad offered here was removed from a magazine. It can be framed and displayed (but many trade ads have different images on each side, so one must choose which side to display if it is framed!). Condition: good. The ad was inserted into a magazine and is printed on a single sheet that was tri-folded to create six "pages". There is paper loss in the top right corner of the page with just Durbin's image, and a tear and paper loss in the bottom right corner (see our image). Learn More about condition grades
