A Linenbacked Advertising Poster (measures 27 3/4" x 42" [70 x 107 cm]) (Learn More)

The International Silver Company (also known as the ISC and the International Silverware Company) was company from 1898 to 1983. It was formed in Meriden, Connecticut as a corporation banding together many existing silver companies in the immediate area and beyond. Some of the companies include: Meriden Silver Plate Co., Middletown Plate Company, C. Rogers & Brother, Wilcox Silver Plate Co. and more. Many of International Silver's products continues to be produced using the original company names. International Silver Company designs have been collected by many museums across the United States, including the Dallas Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, etc.
If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that this is a poster from this company advertising the silver cutlery they made in 1926. It is a "printer's test" poster (see below for what this means). Usually, in the case of printer's tests, it would solely be for a single poster, but in this case, they were printing three posters at one time (to save on printing costs), so this has a larger poster at the top and two smaller posters of the same size at the bottom! This is a very rare uncut printer's test poster (often referred to as a "printer's proof")! Before a poster was printed in large quantities, the printer would print a limited number of posters as "test" posters. Because they needed to be shown to people at the studio, people in the art department, the stars, etc, they would print a number of test posters and distribute them to these people. Some of them would be fully trimmed, but often they would leave the color chart on the left edge of many of the posters, which added an extra inch to the width of the poster (which explains why the poster measures 27 3/4" x 42" [70 x 107 cm]). Once these printer's test posters were shown to the various people in a position to "OK" them, the printer would print the full print run of the posters. Not only is a printer's test poster far more rare than a regular poster, but it is also 100% genuine as there is no fear of purchasing a reproduction!

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster was never folded. It had a 2" tear near the bottom of the right border, with some pinholes, creases, and small tears around the edges. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above.
