An Original Vintage Folded One-Sheet Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Sugar Ray Robinson vs. Randolph Turpin, the 1951 big screen presentation of the boxing sports match ("The supreme fight sensation of all time!"; "World Middleweight Championship promoted by Jack Solomons"; "Now... On The Screen!") between Sugar Ray Robinson and Randy Turpin (Randolph Turpin) that took place in 1951, narrated by Jimmy Powers ("'Powerhouse' Columnist and Sports Editor of New York Daily News"). Note that this was a movie of the 1951 World Middleweight Boxing Championship bout, between titleholder Sugar Ray Robinson (great black African American boxer) and British challenger Randolph Turpin, which resulted in a stunning upset when the little-known Turpin defeated Robinson for the title. It is considered one of the greatest upsets in the history of boxing. Just two months later, they had a rematch in which Robinson regained the title. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare poster. We have only auctioned three with this particular image in all our years of auctioning and the last time was in 2007 (and we have only auctioned the other style twice and the last time was in 2005!) Note that this is one of a collection of 6 one-sheets from film versions of professional boxing matches! In the days before such events moved to network television, top boxing matches would be filmed at ringside and then shown later in movie theaters, complete with commentary. Such posters are far more rare than posters from movies. Our consignor collected these six over many years, and they are being offered in 6 separate auctions. This is a rare opportunity to acquire any or all of these 6 posters! Condition: good. The poster has slightly rippled mainly along portions of the folds and edges and it has slightly darkened throughout (slightly unevenly over the lower edge). There are a few dot stains in and to the left of the inset image and near the title. This is the kind of poster that responds really well to restoration. It is likely that much or most of the very light rippling and darkening could be corrected during the linenbacking process, and after proper restoration the very rare poster will display well, but bear in mind the poster's condition and the cost of restoration before bidding on it.
