Date Sold 6/30/2016Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Unfolded World War II Poster (measures 28" x 38" [71 x 97 cm]) (Learn More) Brute Force Rides Across the World, the 1940s U.S. World War II (WWII) Home Front poster ("Awake America!"; "Preparedness"; "Unity"; "Defense") encouraging people to prepare for war, and featuring Walter Beach Humphrey art of an angry Lady Liberty holding her torch and a mounted warrior with a sword in the background. Note that there are two oddities about this poster. The first is that it is in black and white, and it would seem extremely likely that the original was color, so we wonder if there was also a color version. It is 100% surely a quite old vintage poster (at least the 1950s, and probably the 1940s). But the other oddity is that the sword-wielding man has emblems on his belt, and they are a German swastika, a Russian hammer and sickle, a Japanese rising sun, and a fourth emblem we think is an Italian Fascist Party emblem. But what is odd about this is that Russia was our ally in World War II, and did not become our enemy until well after the war, so one wonders why that emblem was included! Artist: Walter Beach Humphrey Important Added Info: Note that this is one of a remarkable group of around 100 guaranteed authentic mostly war posters (around 75 war posters, plus 25 others, including political ones) mostly dating from before 1900 through 1945, with 15 from after that date! These were originally acquired by an archive decades ago, and they have been in storage ever since, until they were recently consigned to us. Many of these are the sorts of posters that you can find reproductions of on the Internet, but finding guaranteed originals like these is incredibly difficult (years can go by before these are offered for sale or at auction). This is a very rare opportunity to purchase any of these more than 100 posters! Condition: very good. The poster was never folded. It has darkened slightly, more so down the left edge, with some tiny tears and tiny paper loss in that edge, and a 1" tear in the bottom blank border. Otherwise, the poster is in pretty nice condition, especially considering its age. Learn More about condition grades
