Complete Set of 8 Original Vintage Theatrical Lobby Cards (Measures 11" x 14") (Learn More)

Spook Ranch, the 1925 Edward Laemmle silent cowboy western (produced by Carl Laemmle; about a cowboy who goes into a mining town with his "Negro" valet, George Washington Black, and they are arrested, but are given the chance to win back their freedom if they solve the mystery of a "haunted house" on the outside of town; it turns out a gang of outlaws is hiding out there and making it look haunted, and the cowboy solves the case and wins the love of a rancher's daughter) starring Hoot Gibson, Jules Cowles (as George Washington Black), Helen Ferguson, Robert McKim, and Frank Rice. Note that the cowboy's black African American valet is actually played by white actor Jules Cowles in blackface! Apparently, this actor (who had over 100 film appearances but mostly all minor roles) specialized in playing black people by using blackface makeup (he was a native in a few movies, including "The Lost World"). For some unknown reason, the IMDb got bad information and credits him in this movie as "Ed Cowles", and has a separate listing for that made up actor, but they have the correct information on all of Cowles' other movies. If anyone knows more about Jules Cowles, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

Important Added Info: Note that these are hand-colored cards. In the days of silent film prior to the invention of good quality full-color printing, studios would have lobby cards printed in black and white and then amazingly would hire women to hand-color the cards one at a time (apparently labor was very cheap at the time)! So, each card is colored slightly differently, and the coloring is never a perfect match.

Note that this is one of a group of early 1920s lobby cards that were discovered recently. All of the cards had been folded in half. Some of them have next to no other defects, and others have many deffects, all of which are noted below. We sold the first of the cards from this collection several weeks ago on eBay, and this week we offer ALL of the remaining cards from this collection. Note that these are extremely rare lobby cards and the ones we offer here may be the only surviving copies of those cards!

Condition: very good. Each card was folded in half and has some separation in the foldline. Some of the cards have a 1" or small tear in the blank borders. One card has minor rippling from water stains throughout. The cards are in surprisingly good condit
