An Original Vintage Theatrical Unfolded One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 28" x 42" [71 x 107 cm]) (Learn More) Prison Bars, the 1901 Walter Barnsdale silent crime prison documentary. Note that details on this movie are difficult to find. It appears to have been a very early documentary filmed in Wisconsin's Waupun Prison. Walter Barnsdale made this film (and a few others) and toured with an electronic lamp house and a portable gasoline power supply of his own invention to show his films in the towns and cities that he visited. Barnsdale is a forgotten pioneer of movies who, at the turn of the 20th century in Wisconsin, created his own movies and exhibited them at prisons around the country (he had the ultimate "captive audience"!). Not surprisingly, all of Barnsdale's movies were morality plays, designed to uplift the inmates who viewed them. In the 1960s, Barnsdale's son surfaced with multiple examples of several posters his father had made at the turn of the century (including this one). Those posters were sold decades ago, and one rarely sees any of them for sale. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this poster, and that was 24 years ago, when it sold for $1,093! Also note that this one-sheet has never been folded and it measures 28" x 42" [71 x 107 cm]. It has a 9" x 24" paper snipe attached to the bottom that was surely added in 1901 or soon after. It can be left on the poster (and it is certainly a wonderful part of the poster's history), or certainly, any restorer or talented amateur could remove it, but that will be the choice of the new owner of this rare and historic poster. Condition: very good to fine. The poster was never folded and has some very minor border wear. Overall, it has likely survived in about as nice condition as one could hope, especially considering it is well over a century old! As noted above, the glued on snipe could easily be removed from any professional or talented amateur, but it surely is part of the history of this cool poster. Learn More about condition grades
