He has played a central part in the development of avant-garde jazz, and is featured in the 1981 documentary film Imagine the Sound, in which he discusses and performs his music and poetry. As of 2023, he is alive at the age of 85. Important Added Info: Note that this is one of sixteen great stills we were consigned that all show black African American musical performers. Such stills are extremely rare. All are clearly originals and most have information on the back indicating that they were publicity stills.
