An Original 1926 (from the first release of this movie in the U.K.) Vintage Theatrical Folded English Six-Sheet (called a 12sh in England) Movie Poster (6sh; measures 80" x 85" [203 x 216 cm]) (Learn More) Down Upon the Swanee River, the 1925 Lem F. Kennedy silent separated-couple-has-all-kinds-of-troubles melodrama ("A beautiful southern story based upon the immortal song by Stephen Foster, which will strike a responsive chord in the heard of every man, woman & child."; about a man who is an atheist in the American South, and because of this, he is falsely accused of a crime, and he takes off, leaving his wife, who, unknown to him, is pregnant, and the entire town shuns her, and he goes to work on a ship sailing around the world, and meanwhile, she tries to drown herself, but an old Negro rescues her, and when she returns home, she finds her husband has returned too, and he renounces his atheism, and they are forgiven and accepted by their church!) starring Mary Thurman, Charles Emmett Mack, Arthur Donaldson, Walter Merrill, and Blanche Davenport. Note that the filmmakers apparently bought the rights to the classic Stephen Foster song, which had been written in 1851, but they really just used it as a launching point, inventing the above complicated story. Obviously, what they really wanted was the title, because the only poster we have seen from this movie gives large credit to the song and quotes from it! Also note that leading lady Mary Thurman had been a school teacher who became a Mack Sennett Bathing Beauty whose career started to take off, but sadly, she caught pneumonia in 1925, at age 30, and passed away. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that first release 1926 movie paper from this movie is incredibly rare. We have never auctioned even a single poster (only a few lobby cards) from this movie until we received this English six-sheet! Note that this English six-sheet was printed in 4 sections designed to overlap. Condition: very good. There is a fair amount of darkening on the back of the part of the poster that was on the outside when it was fully folded, but it only has a little effect on the front, and the poster is not fragile. There are some creases and several tears along the foldlines that were on the outside when the poster was fully folded. There are some creases, smudges, and tiny tears on some foldlines, and some tiny paper loss at some crossfolds. I would say that this poster has survived in about as good condition as one could hope, especially because it is over 90 years old! Learn More about condition grades
