Date Sold 1/14/2018Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage 2 3/4" x 4 1/2" [7 x 11 cm] Photo (Learn More) Eskimo, the 1933 W.S. Van Dyke Alaska/Canada arctic adventure melodrama ("These women were helpless creatures of a strange moral code"; "A terrific drama of man and beast, the wildest strangest love story of the year"; "From the books 'Der Eskimo' and 'Die Flucht Ins Weisse Land' by Peter Freuchen"; about the daily life of Inuit Eskimos in then present day Alaska; it was mostly shot on location and presented in a documentary-like fashion; because it was pre-Code, they could show the then Eskimo tradition of "sharing wives", although the practice would soon disappear; the movie shows the Eskimos' daily hunt for food, and it also shows the effects meeting white traders had on them) starring Ray Mala (billed as "Mala"), Edgar Dearing, Peter Freuchen, Edward Hearn, Lotus Long, and Joe Sawyer. Note that director W.S. Van Dyke went on location to film this movie, and he hired real Eskimos to play the male Eskimo parts in the movie (because actors probably wouldn't have wanted to, plus they probably couldn't have done what was required of them). He found Ray Wise, who played the lead role of Mala the Eskimo, and he was so well received, that moved to Hollywood and changed his name to Ray Mala, and had a successful career! Japanese-Hawaiian actress Lotus Long played one of Mala's wives, but it is not known what the names of the other actresses were. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that when this movie played at this theater, they created a giant "igloo" out in the street with a sign over it reading "Reserved for Eskimo Playing Here January 10". This was a typical wacky promotion that theaters did in the 1930s. Because this photo was found with photos from the later 1930s, we would not think it is from the 1933 first release of this movie, but on the other hand, would they have gone to this much trouble for a re-release? We don't know, but please do not bid on this photo unless you can accept the possibility that it could be from a 1930s re-release. Also note that in October and November of 2017, we auctioned a wonderful collection of around 60 photos (most measured 3.5x5.25, but some measured slightly smaller) that were taken by a man who worked at a large movie theater in the late 1930s and early 1940s. He created wonderful theater fronts and homemade posters (some that were displayed outside the theater and some inside the theater), and after he finished making his displays, he would take a picture of each and then he put them in a scrapbook. Collectors rightfully bid aggressively on these photos, and the best of them auctioned for hundreds of dollars each! Now we are offering another 32 photos from this amazing scrapbook, and after this, there will just be a few bulk lots of the remaining photos (either because they are from much lesser movies or are in lesser condition). So this is the last chance to acquire these very rare to find photos of original theater fronts and local theater displays from this time period. Each of the 32 photos is in a separate auction with this paragraph on them. Condition: good. There are tiny yellow pieces of tape in each blank corner, with some smudges scattered through the photo (see our images). Learn More about condition grades
