A 1940 Re-Release (re-titled "City of Lost Men" for this re-release) Vintage Theatrical Forty by Sixty Movie Poster (40x60; measures 40" x 60" [102 x 152 cm]) (Learn More)

The Lost City (of the Legurian), the 1935 Harry Revier Africa science fiction (sci-fi) jungle safari action adventure serial ("High-Voltage Action! Electrifying Thrills! Thunderbolt Drama!"; "The picture that's 100 years ahead of its time!"; produced by Sherman S. Krellberg) starring William 'Stage' Boyd, Kane Richmond, Claudia Dell, George 'Gabby' Hayes, Josef Swickard, Ralph Lewis, Billy Bletcher, Eddie Fetherson, Gino Carrado, Jerry Frank "and 500 others!". Note that the chapter one-sheets of this serial have a tiny "of the Legurian", after the title, but we have no clue what that means or if that was in any way part of the official title. Also, as was common with 1930s serials, there was a regular feature version of this serial, condensing the material from all 12 chapters into a single feature-length film. But, in this case, there was also a second feature version, which solely used material from the first four and the last four chapters, eliminating the subplot covered in the middle four chapters entirely! We imagine that someone at that time looked at the entire serial and realized they could make a better feature version by eliminating the middle section, and they did so! Finally, we know that the movie was re-released as a feature in the 1940s by Goodwill Productions, but we don't know which of the two above feature versions was reused in the 1940s (probably 1942 or 1943, based on the litho number on the poster), but we do know that it was re-titled "City of Lost Men". If anyone knows more about any of this, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

Important Added Info: Note that this poster is from the circa 1940 re-release of the feature version of the 1935 William Boyd serial (see above). Also note that the poster is on a heavy board (it was created that way) and was likely created by a regional company that supplied posters for roadshow releases of low budget movies. It will need to be sent in a very large flat package.

UPDATED 11/12/2012: Note that the consignor of these posters tells us that, contrary to what was written in the auction description, the posters had Plexiglas over them for the years they were displayed, but obviously it did not provide enough protection to the posters, because they sustained the damaged described on each.

Condition: fair. The poster was created on a heavy board, with red tape around the edges to create a "picture frame-like" border. Someone nailed the poster to a wall with nails in the red border areas and it hung on a wall unprotected for decades, and there are several major scratches scattered in the top center and middle left of the poster, with a few in the lower right (see our image). The red tape is separated and frayed in the corners.
