An Original Vintage Linenbacked French World War I Poster (measures 30 1/2" x 46 3/4" [77 x 119 cm]) (Learn More)

Pour La Liberte Du Monde (literally translates to "For the Freedom of the World"), the 1917 French World War I (WWI) War Bonds poster commissioned by the Banque Nationale De Credit to encourage citizens to help the war efforts through bond sales in the "Third Annual Defense Loan", which was held from November 25th to December 16th. Note that this poster features SEM (Georges Goursat) artwork of the Statue of Liberty rising over the horizon, as seen from France (looking westward over the ocean), and was paying tribute to the United States officially entering the war. Using this imagery on this poster was paying tribute to the United States having entered the war in April of 1917, and was reminding France that the friendship between the two countries dated all the way back to the American Revolution, when France played a key role in helping America secure its independence, and then gave the Statue of Liberty to the U.S. a century later. The Statue of Liberty is very rarely seen in any posters from this perspective!
Artist: SEM (Georges Goursat)
Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this French war poster!

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had small paper loss at the crossfolds and some creases and a few tiny areas of paper loss on the folds and darkening on the borders. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well!
