An Original Vintage Theatrical German Movie Poster (measures 35 3/4" x 53 1/4" [91 x 135 cm]) (Learn More) Peter, Der Matrose (literally translates to "Peter, The Sailor"), the 1929 Reinhold Schunzel German silent romantic melodrama (about a rich society man who falls in love with a bad woman who cheats on him and steals all his money, and he is so disillusioned that he goes off to sea as a common sailor) starring Reinhold Schunzel (in the title role as Peter Sturz), Renate Muller, Hans Heinrich von Twardowski (billed as "H. Heinz v. Twardowski"), Allan Durant, and Rudolf Biebrach. It appears this movie was never released in the U.S. If anyone knows more about this movie, please e-mail us and we will post it here. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is a very rare "country of origin" poster from Germany from before World War II, which we have never auctioned before (we are also auctioning a different style German poster in a separate auction). There are very few German movie posters from before World War II in existence (because of the massive paper shortages in Germany during World War II), and most of those few are in museums. We are currently also auctioning a second German poster from this same movie with a completely different image, in two separate auctions, but both are from the first release in Germany. Also note that this poster has been trimmed and it now measures 35 3/4" x 53 1/4" [91 x 135 cm]. Note that this poster has been mounted onto a "Chartex"-like material (we are not 100% certain it is Chartex, but if not, it is something very similar. Chartex is a backing paper that is a linen-like paper, similar to the material you line drawers with. It serves its function well in that the poster is preserved, which is why many restorers other than movie poster restorers use it, but it is very difficult to impossible to remove from the back of the poster. SO DO NOT BID ON THIS POSTER UNLESS YOU CAN ACCEPT THAT IT LIKELY CAN'T BE REMOVED FROM ITS BACKING, AND WILL NEED TO BE KEPT AS IT IS (although it is not harming the poster, and it enables it to be displayed). Condition: fair to good. The horizontal folds in the poster have "returned", both in the poster and the Chartex backing. The poster was mounted onto "Chartex" (see above) with no restoration. It has excess Chartex at the top and bottom. It almost surely can't be removed from the backing, but it can certainly be displayed as it is. DO NOT BID ON THIS POSTER UNLESS YOU CAN ACCEPT THAT IT LIKELY CAN'T BE REMOVED FROM ITS BACKING, AND WILL NEED TO BE KEPT AS IT IS (although it is not harming the poster, and it enables it to be displayed).
