An Original Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10 1/4" [20 x 26 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Herr Tartuff (released in the U.S. in 1927 as "Tartuffe" and "Tartuffe: The Hypocrite"), the 1925 F.W. Murnau German silent family relationship inheritance melodrama (a very clever movie that was decades ahead of its time; about a young man who has a wealthy ancient grandfather, and he discovers that his grandfather's governess has exerted control over him to have him disinherit his grandson and leave his fortune to her; the young man, who is an actor, brings a filmed version of Moliere's Tartuffe to his grandfather and shows it to him; in that "film within a film", you see the story of a man who falls under the control of a religious fanatic, played by Emil Jannings, and it is only through great effort that the man comes to see that the religious fanatic he has been influenced by is actually a fraud; after the movie is shown, the grandfather realizes that he has been duped in a similar way by his governess) starring Emil Jannings (in the title role as Tartuffe, in the movie within the movie), Hermann Picha, Rosa Valetti, Andre Mattoni, Werner Krauss, Lil Dagover, and Lucie Hoflich. Note that director Murnau employed this unusual technique, which would later become far more common, but which was very extremely innovative in its day, and the cinematography was by long time Murnau collaborator, Karl Freund, and the movie is considered an amazing visual achievement (both the entire movie and the movie within the movie!). NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this is a still from the first U.S. release of this German movie. At this time, when German movies played in the U.S., they would send images of the German lobby cards, and they would be printed as U.S. stills. That is why you can see part of the UFA logo at the bottom left of the image, because the aspect ratio of the still is not the same as that of the German lobby card. But this is a first release U.S. still from 1927. Also note that this still measures 8" x 10 1/4" [20 x 26 cm]. Condition: good to very good. There was paper loss in the right of the top blank border and someone put a piece of tape on the front and back of that area. There is a 1" tear in the lower right border with a piece of tape on the back of that. Learn More about condition grades
