Date Sold 6/30/2016Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Unfolded World War II Poster (measures 30" x 40" [76 x 102 cm]) (Learn More) The U.S. Marines Want You, the 1942 U.S. World War II (WWII) recruitment poster ("Enlist today") featuring art of a Marine beckoning with an American flag in the background. Note that the art is very striking, and we have seen it attributed to James Montgomery Flagg, but it is unsigned, and we can find no verification of who created it. It is an update of a World War I (WWI) recruiting poster with most of the same text and a similar soldier, but with a French flag behind him. Each example of this poster had a blank area at the bottom so that a local enlistment site could be overprinted. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: James Montgomery Flagg Important Added Info: Note that this is one of a remarkable group of around 100 guaranteed authentic mostly war posters (around 75 war posters, plus 25 others, including political ones) mostly dating from before 1900 through 1945, with 15 from after that date! These were originally acquired by an archive decades ago, and they have been in storage ever since, until they were recently consigned to us. Many of these are the sorts of posters that you can find reproductions of on the Internet, but finding guaranteed originals like these is incredibly difficult (years can go by before these are offered for sale or at auction). This is a very rare opportunity to purchase any of these more than 100 posters! Condition: very good. The poster was never folded. It has many tears and small areas of paper loss down the left blank border, but is otherwise in remarkable condition, especially considering its age. The left blank border defects can easily be repaired through a simple linenbacking, or of course, they would not show if the poster is matted. Learn More about condition grades
