An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Window Card Stage Play Poster (WC; measures 11" x 18" [28 x 46 cm]) (Learn More) Uncle Tom's Cabin, the 1898 Al W. Martin stage play adaptation of Harriet Beecher Stowe's classic, which helped bring about the end of slavery and the Civil War, thanks to its depiction of the cruel treatment of African American slaves in the South. The Library of Congress has a different black & white poster from this production that date to circa 1899, but this poster has a copyright date of 1898 under the printer logo, so we would think it is actually that date. The Library of Congress poster is pretty boring, but this window card-like poster has wonderful art of Uncle Tom holding a fishing pole that chickens are standing on, and there is a caption that reads, "Dey done went to roost on my fish'in' pole"! Little seems to be known about this stage version. If anyone knows more about it, please e-mail us and we will post it here. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (except somewhat heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards. Condition: good. Prior to paperbacking, the card had had its top blank area trimmed off, and it had been folded across the original middle and there were creases along that fold. There was a 7" vertical tear running from Tom's mouth down to the bottom border. There were stains and smudges scattered throughout with some paper loss around the edges, more so in the top left and bottom right corners, but mostly only affecting background areas. Overall, the card was in good condition prior to paperbacking. The card was pretty well backed, especially given its age and defects, but at some point after it was backed, it acquired some tiny bits of surface paper loss in the lower left (in the background area and in one of Tom's legs (any restorer could touch up that area without re-backing the card). This has a wonderful image, and is likely the only surviving example, but please do not bid on this poster unless you can accept its defects described above or are willing to pay to have further restoration.
