An Original Vintage 7 3/4" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Key Book Still (Learn More) Jean Arthur was famous during the 1920s through the 1940s as a smart, cute, sassy, and sexy screen personality. She was a major star of the 1930s, but she was far from an "overnight success"! She was born in 1900, and appeared in 46 silent movies, mostly in minor roles. Once sound movies began, she quickly gained stardom, no doubt partially due to her distinctive voice, and she became a major star in her middle thirties! Her final movie (a great choice for a swan song) was Shane. Some of her movies include: Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, You Can't Take It with You, Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, Seven Chances, The More The Merrier (in her nominated for Best Actress Academy Award role), Only Angels Have Wings, The Talk of the Town, The Whole Town's Talking, and many more! AND Virginia Bruce was an actress from the 1920s to the 1980s. She is thought of as a "1930s actress", but actually, she had nine uncredited roles in 1929! Some of her movies include: The Invisible Woman, Pardon My Sarong, Jane Eyre, and Kongo AND Lillian Roth (born Lillian Rutstein) was an actress from the 1920s to the 1970s. She started in vaudeville with her sister Ann as "The Roth Sisters", but when Lillian started making movies, the sisters went their separate ways. Lillian was a sexy actress whose turbulent off camera life gained her far more notoriety than her movie work. She had stage fright and other nervous disorders, and she self medicated with alcohol and drugs, and she soon became an alcoholic and was married six times, and was never single for long. Her life was the basis for the movie "I'll Cry Tomorrow" starring Susan Hayward, which brought alcoholism into the consciousness of mainstream America. Some of her movies include: The Love Parade, Animal Crackers, Boardwalk, Madam Satan, and Communion Important Added Info: What a wonderful still this is! It is one of those wacky staged promo photos where studios would plant these kinds of images in newspapers, in order to get publicity for their current movies and new stars, and in this case, it has Jean Arthur, Virginia Bruce, and Lillian Roth in football uniforms arm-in-arm! Also note that this still is a key book still, mounted to a linen backing. Many studios spent extra money to have their most special photos, the key book stills, either backed with linen or printed on a heavy paper, both of which enhanced their durability. They had an extra 1" at the left or top, with punch holes, because of how they were stored. Key book stills are far more rare than regular stills, which has increased their popularity among collectors, since only a few keybooks were manufactured per film, and a key book still is guaranteed to be authentic. Someone trimmed away the extra 1" from the top of the still. Condition: very good. The top 1" was neatly trimmed off (see above). Otherwise, the still is in pretty nice condition!
