An Original Vintage Linenbacked World War I Poster (measures 30 3/4" x 41 1/2" [78 x 105 cm]) (Learn More) And They Thought We Couldn't Fight, the 1919 U.S. post-World War I (WWI) War Bond poster ("Victory Liberty Loan") encouraging civilians to purchase war bonds (to help pay for the huge debts incurred during the war), and featuring Clyde Forsythe art of a rifle-wielding, wounded U.S. soldier holding three German helmets as trophies Artist: Clyde Forsythe Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster was never folded. It had pinholes in the corners and some tears and small paper loss in the blank borders, with paper loss and small tears in the bottom of the left blank border, extending into the edge of the black background. There are creases in the corners that extend into the image (see our image). Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above, except that they touched up and squared off the missing black background in the bottom left corner without replacing any paper (likely assuming that that the borders will not show when the poster is framed). One could certainly display the poster as it is or choose to have additional restoration performed (with or without re-backing the poster). Learn More about condition grades
