An Original Vintage Theatrical French Movie Pressbook (pb; measures 8" x 10 1/4" [20 x 26 cm]; 8 pages) (Learn More) The Phantom of the Opera, the classic 1925 Rupert Julian Universal silent Paris France opera house murder mystery horror thriller ("Carl Laemmle presents Gaston Leroux's magnificent story of Parisian gaiety and intrigue"; "Weird! Wild! Wonderful!"; from the novel by Gaston Leroux, which was published in a serialized format in 1909 and 1910) starring Lon Chaney Sr. (in the title role as Erik, The Phantom), Norman Kerry (as Vicomte Raoul de Chagny), Mary Philbin (as Christine Daae), Arthur Edmund Carewe (as Ledoux), Gibson Gowland (as Simon Buquet), Carla Laemmle (uncredited as one of the ballerinas), Alexander Bevani, and "5000 others". Note that this movie was remade in 1943 with Claude Rains as the Phantom and Susannah Foster as Christine. In 1986, Andrew Lloyd Webber made a musical stage play version, which is perhaps the most successful stage play of all time, and is still running on Broadway! In 2004, Webber's musical was made into a movie, with Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum. Also note that as they did with many of their major productions at this time, Universal created two completely different sets of lobby cards, with different designs and two title cards, so there are sixteen first release cards, two sets of eight. Artist: Roger Soubie Important Added Info: Note that this wonderful French pressbook is 8 "pages", but it is actually printed on a single sheet that measures 16" x 20 1/2", and is folded twice to create those 8 "pages". The cover has a wonderful full-color art image of the Phantom at the costume ball, and it has Roger Soubie's signature printed at the bottom, which is the earliest Soubie art we have ever seen (he was 27 at the time, and he ended up doing thousands of images over his career, but we could not find anything earlier than this). The pressbook opens up to the 16" x 20 1/2" "poster", which has portraits of Chaney and Philbin, and three scenes from the movie, and also lists the various posters available. The other pages show an image of Carl Laemmle and author Gaston Leroux, together with a list of the sections of the movie. WE HAVE NEVER AUCTIONED THIS WONDERFUL PRESSBOOK BEFORE! Condition: good to very good, NO CUTS. There is scuffing and some stains in the gold areas of the covers (see our image). Otherwise, the pressbook is in pretty nice condition!
