A Photographic Negative (measures 4" x 5" [10 x 13 cm]) (Learn More) Lana Turner (born Julia Jean Mildred Frances Turner) was an actress from the 1930s to the 1990s. She was born in 1921 in Idaho, and her father was murdered when she was a young girl, and her mother moved to California. In 1937, she was discovered at a soda fountain (not Schwab's, but one close by), and she had a small role in 1937's "They Won't Forget", and she became very popular very quickly. She remained a top leading actress for over 20 years, though her turbulent personal life definitely affected her career (including the murder of her violent gangster lover, Johnny Stompanato, by her own 14 year old daughter Cheryl Crane, and also her eight husbands, the first of which was bandleader Artie Shaw, who himself was married eight times, including to Ava Gardner!). Some of her movies include: The Postman Always Rings Twice, Imitation of Life, The Bad and the Beautiful, Peyton Place (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. She passed away in 1995 at the age of 74. Important Added Info: Note that this great candid shows Lana Turner leaving Los Angeles Juvenile Hall after visiting with her 14 year old daughter Cheryl, who had, at that point, been held in juvie for two weeks for stabbing Miss Turner's lover, mobster Johnny Stompanato (and of course, there are those who think that Miss Turner might have been responsible for the stabbing, but that her daughter took the blame, knowing she would not get punished). The above information comes from the cool snipe glued to the sleeve the negative is contained in, and part of it is folded over to the back, which we did not photograph, but it contains more information. Note that this is a "studio-issued" negative. What is it? It was produced by the studio but is not the camera original. It is very high quality and was created in quantity by the studios and sent to media outlets or other places that had need of the very highest quality image for reproduction purposes (in newspapers, magazines, or elsewhere). We have put a scan of the negative that shows the "positive image" (in addition to a scan of the negative image). REMEMBER THAT WHAT YOU RECEIVE WILL BE A PHOTOGRAPHIC NEGATIVE, NOT A POSITIVE IMAGE LIKE YOU ARE SEEING. However, we will provide the winning bidder of this auction that positive image scan that is both high quality and not watermarked (on request to the winning bidder, and only the winning bidder). The negative is in a plastic sleeve (but we removed it and scanned it, so that bidders could see just how high quality it is). It will be sent to the winner of the auction in its plastic sleeve.
