An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Movie Title Lobby Card (LC TC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More)

The Young Rajah, the 1922 Philip E. Rosen (billed as "Philip Rosen") silent India royalty romantic melodrama ("From the play 'Amos Judd' by Aletha Lude and the novel by John A. Mitchell"; a great story of the son of an Indian Rajah who is brought to the United States because it is feared that he will be assassinated, and he is given an American name and grows up not knowing his ancestry, and he goes to Harvard, where he is a star athlete, and he is about to be married to an American girl, but he has a vision that there is about to be an attempt on his life, and it happens, but he is rescued and told the truth about his heritage, and he goes to India, leaving his American girlfriend behind, but he is not heartbroken, because he has a vision of a future Hindu wedding with his American girlfriend as his bride) starring Rudolph Valentino (billed here under his given name "Rodolph"), Wanda Hawley, Charles Ogle, Fanny Midgley, and George Periolat. Note that this is a "lost" film, which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist.

Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this title card, and that was 30 years ago in a complete set (the entire set sold for $1,760!). Note that this lobby card has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the lobby card was backed onto a very light paper backing (acid-free), that keeps the "feel" of the lobby card similar to that of the original lobby card. Some restorers prefer to paperback lobby cards on to a heavy backing, while others prefer to use a very lightweight backing. The advantage of a lightweight backing is that the card still "feels" like a regular lobby card, but a heavier backing makes restoration easier to do and less noticeable. Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has.

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. Prior to paperbacking, someone cut out the image of Valentino and the diamond-shaped area next to him with scissors, and they cut around Valentino's figure, causing paper loss to the left of his feet and to the right of his entire body, and also in the second "N" of his name at top. But that person did not throw out the rest of the card, and at a later date, the two pieces were brought back together, and a restorer re-drew in the trimmed away areas around Valentino's figure described above. There were some pinholes around the edges, with a tear at the top of the second "N" of "VALENTINO" going to the top border. Overall, the lobby card was in fair to good condition prior to paperbacking. The restorer did a nice job with a complicated restoration, and the card displays well, but you can see slight signs of it, and bear in mind all of the above before bidding.
