Artist: d'apres Boris Grinsson
Important Added Info: Note that this poster reuses the Grinsson art from the first release French poster, but because it was not the first time the art was used, the poster designer added "d'apres", meaning that this was not the first time this artwork was used. There is "6/53 Depot legal 2/53 (23.578)", and this could mean that this is the second printing of the poster in 1953, and that this artwork was never used before that earlier printing in 1953, but we are not certain. Also note that in the early 1990s (prior to the Internet!), we were told by an expert that "Gone with the Wind" first premiered in France in 1947, but the IMDb says that did not happen until 1950. Either way, then this is definitely a 1953 re-release and the second printing from 1953. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

Note that this poster is extremely rare! We have only previously auctioned it once before, and that was 9 years ago, when it sold for $3,833 (and of course, we have also never auctioned the first printing of this French Grinsson poster either).

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair. The poster had paper loss at some crossfolds and separation and small paper loss on parts of several folds. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. At some point years ago, it was linenbacked and restored and surely presented well. Unfortunately, it was displayed in a frame, and the reds in the poster faded considerably, and to make matters worse, the restoration paint from the linenbacking did not age in that way, so it is extremely noticeable. So the new owner of the poster will have to decide how to deal with this (perhaps by having the reds throughout brightened to match the restoration paint, or maybe another approach). In addition, the poster was attached to a frame with a great number of small pieces of strapping tape all around the excess linen, and that is something else to be aware of. Please do not bid on this poster unless you can accept its significant defects described above.
