Date Sold 8/31/2023Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Unfolded [War] Poster (measures 19" x 28" [48 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) Teufel Hunden (literally translates to "Devil Dogs"), the 1917 U.S. World War I (WWI) military recruitment poster ("German nickname for U.S. Marines"; "Devil Dog recruiting station") encouraging Americans to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC), and featuring Charles Buckles Falls art of a bulldog wearing a Marine helmet chasing a dachshund wearing a German helmet. Note that it has been said that the nickname "Devil Dogs" originated as a German expression for the Marines who fought at the bloody Battle of Belleau Wood (supposedly since they wore gas masks when charging up the hill which caused them to sweat profusely, foam at the mouth and crawl on all fours!). Artist: Charles Buckles Falls Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare poster. We have never auctioned one in all our years of auctioning! Condition: good to very good. The poster was never folded. It has partial horizontal (slightly diagonal) creases in the lower half with lighter ones scattered in the upper half. It has a few tiny pinholes around the edges. It is otherwise in pretty nice condition and after linenbacking with some proper restoration the very rare WWI poster will look great! Learn More about condition grades
