A Linenbacked Australian Travel Poster (measures 23" x 39 1/2" [58 x 100 cm]) (Learn More)

Koninklijke Paketvaart-Maatschappij (Dutch for Royal Packet Navigation Company and better known as KPM or K.P.M.) was a Dutch shipping company in the Netherlands East Indies (now Indonesia) from 1888 to 1966. It was the dominant inter-island shipping line in Indonesia during the last half century of the colonial era. KPM maintained connections between the islands of Indonesia and supported the unification of the Dutch colony economy as the Netherlands expanded its territory across the Indonesian archipelago. The company brought inter-island commerce through the capital of Batavia (now Jakarta) rather than to Singapore, which shifted economic activity to Java.
Artist: H.M. Burton
Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this travel poster! Also note that this poster has been trimmed and it now measures 23" x 39 1/2" [58 x 100 cm].

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster originally had four white borders with a pattern in each border. Someone trimmed off the left and right white borders from this poster, but otherwise, the poster was in pretty nice condition, with two tape stains in the bottom left corner and a tear above that. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking, depending on how you value the trimming of the left and right borders. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above.
