An Unfolded German Special Poster (measures 33 1/4" x 47 1/4" [84 x 120 cm]) (Learn More) Das Gluckhafte Schiff (literally translates to "The Lucky Ship"), the 1938 German poster promoting an event which was held from February 25th to the 28th at the Vier Jahreszeiten in Munich, Germany, and featuring Anton Leidl art of a mermaid and a sailor in a mask-boat. It is interesting to note that when Adolf Hitler became the leader of Germany, he banned all expressionist and "modern" art as "decadent", but oddly, he allowed this sort of event, and the posters created for them, to continue (perhaps it was related to it taking place in Munich, and perhaps he had fond years of living in Munich as a young man, including when he was in prison near the city, when he wrote "Mein Kampf", and perhaps he did not have a philosophical difference with this kind of event!). If anyone knows more about this event, please e-mail us and we will post it here. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Anton Leidl Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare poster. We have only auctioned one in all our years of auctioning and that was in 2017 and it sold for $430, and now that very same poster has been reconsigned to us for this auction, so it is still the only example of this poster we have ever auctioned! Posters from this time period are extremely scarce, due to the massive paper shortages in Germany during World War II. Many of these posters are for specific events that were held, and naturally, those posters would figure to be even more rare, since they could only have been used prior to the date of the event. Condition: very good. The poster was never folded. It has some tiny tears and tiny bits of paper loss in small parts of the borders. Someone put some tape on the back of the entire right border where there had been a few small tears, but it is mostly unnoticeable from the front. But overall, the poster has survived in pretty nice condition, and its defects are primarily in the blank borders. Learn More about condition grades
