A Folded Special Poster (measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More)

Cleveland Artists' Curb Market, the 1933 poster ("A carnival of American art"; "In the tent ... directly back of Severance Hall, morn till midnite...") promoting an event to benefit unemployed artists which took place on August 8th in Cleveland, Ohio. This poster features art of Uncle Sam by Geoffrey Archibald. Note that this event first occurred in 1932, and it was sponsored by the Cleveland Print Makers, the Kokoon Arts Klub and others to assist artists affected by the Great Depression. The Kokoon Arts Klub was a "Bohemian artists group" founded by Carl Moellmann and William Sommer, and known for it's "unconventional activities and espousal of 'new art'". It was a predecessor of the WPA (the Works Progress Administration), the massive program started by FDR to put millions of Americans back to work, including artists, writers, and many others.

Artist: Geoffrey Archibald
Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this poster, and it is surely incredibly rare! It is printed to exact one-sheet size, so it is surely printed by people who printed one-sheets in 1933, but because it is for a special event, we are calling it a "special" poster. We would think there are very few posters for any of these special events that were held at this time, and this may well be the only example of this poster that survives.

Condition: very good. The poster has two evenly spaced vertical folds and three evenly spaced horizontal folds. It has 1" of separation and tiny paper loss at the top two crossfolds and tiny separation at the bottom two crossfolds. It has a few extremely tiny tears in the borders. Other than the above, the poster is in really nice condition!
