An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Pressbook (pb; measures 10" x 13 3/4" [25 x 35 cm]; 16 pages) (Learn More) The Silent Command, the 1923 J. Gordon Edwards silent Navy military romantic spy espionage melodrama ("Love, intrigue and the high seas"; "Story by Rufus King"; about American ships in the Canal Zone and enemy agents hire a pretty spy to romance the captain of one of the ships into betraying his country; he plays along and leaves his wife, but at the end, he catches all the spies) starring Edmund Lowe, Alma Tell, Betty Jewel, Florence Martin, Martha Mansfield, Bela Lugosi, and Carl Harbaugh. Note that this was Bela Lugosi's first U.S. movies, playing one of the spies. He only appeared in a handful of U.S. movies through the 1920s, and he returned to Europe and made a few movies there, but then he had his great success in the stage version of "Dracula", and he was brought back to Hollywood to star in the film version, and the rest, as they say, "is history"! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this pressbook! Also note that we have provided an image of the front and back covers of this pressbook (if the back cover is not the poster page, we photographed the interior poster page), and of course, the winner of this auction will receive the entire single pressbook we are auctioning (plus any supplements or heralds described above)! Also note that this pressbook is complete and uncut! Given that theater owners received pressbooks partly in order to create their newspaper advertising, and quite frequently cut them up for that purpose, it is rare to find a pressbook that IS complete and uncut! Condition: good to very good, NO CUTS. The pressbook is complete and uncut. It was folded across the middle, and there are smudges along that fold. There is a stamp in the middle right of the front cover, with some smudges scattered on both covers. Someone wrote the date between the words of the title. The interior pages are in nice condition.
