Anna and the King of Siam, the classic 1946 John Cromwell historical Thailand royalty romantic teacher melodrama ("Based upon the biography by Margaret Landon"; produced by Darryl F. Zanuck; later turned into the hit Broadway musical and movie, "The King and I") starring Irene Dunne (in the title role as Anna), Rex Harrison (in the title role as the King of Siam; his first American role, in yellowface!), Linda Darnell, Lee J. Cobb, Gale Sondergaard (nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film), Mikhail Rasumny, Dennis Hoey, Tito Renaldo, Richard Lyon, and Laurette Luez. Note that Darnell's character is burned at the stake for leaving the king. Tragically, Darnell herself would die in a house fire 19 years later.

Artist: Herbert Ryman
Important Added Info: Note that this wonderful piece of production art was painted by Herbert Ryman (the work is not signed, but our consignor purchased this from a Profiles in History auction, where they identified it as his work). The painting is on two 8" x 10 1/4" panels of illustration paper, which were each mounted to heavy illustration board, and then taped together from the reverse. The painting shows Anna and her son Louis (seen at bottom left) first arriving on the grounds of the immense Siamese Royal Palace. The movie won the Oscar for Best Art Direction! As noted above, our consignor purchased this from a Profiles in History auction in 2012, although they did not provide him with a certificate of authenticity (but we feel certain it is authentic).

Condition: very good to fine.
