An Original Vintage Spanish Campaign Book (measures 8" x 10 3/4" [20 x 27 cm]; 56 pages) (Learn More)

54 Producciones Universal ("Temporada de 1925-26"), the 1925-26 Spanish campaign book. Universal had published this in English as a "special edition" of Universal Weekly, Universal's weekly trade publication for theater owners, calling it "The Second White List", which was a sequel to the First White List published the year before. Apparently, Universal had a substantial distribution in Spanish speaking countries at this time, and they also published this Spanish edition of the English version, except that everything is in Spanish, and humorously, the first page shows Carl Laemmle, except he is billed as "Don Carlos Laemmle" (no doubt to endear him to the Spanish speaking theater owners). We don't know exactly what countries this was intended for, but it gives information about Universal's distribution offices all over the world, including Spain, Argentina, Chile, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Peru, the Philippines, Panama, and Venezuela. The book includes 56 pages with mostly one-page spreads on Universal's upcoming movies, including a pitch for theaters to bring back their two greatest hits, "The Phantom of the Opera" and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". Some of the other movies listed include The Plot Thickens (with Laura La Plante), The Titans (with House Peters), The Calgary Stampede (with Hoot Gibson), Peacock Feathers (with Jacqueline Logan), Stella Maris (with Mary Philbin), and many more with cool artwork ads! We have included images of the covers of the book and two of the two-page spreads (and we did not make a big effort to find the best ones!). Also note that, as was often the case with these campaign books, some of the movies advertised were either never made, had their titles changed before they were released, or were made with different casts than those announced in the campaign book (I do not have time to research the titles in this campaign book to see which had changed titles or were never made, but if anyone has more information about any of these, please e-mail us and we will post that information here)! Note that even though this campaign book was sent to many theater owners, it appears that very few examples have survived. I have been a collector of campaign books and related material for many years, and I know for certain that this campaign book is extremely rare! Note that some of the movies listed in this book may never have been made at all, and some had their titles changed, and some had their cast or director changed! Note that studios almost always spent far more money preparing campaign books than they did preparing movie posters (often hiring very talented and well-known illustration artists), because campaign books directly benefited the studio in getting theaters to book the movies, whereas posters more benefited the theaters, rather than the studios (although of course, what was good for the theaters was ultimately good for the studios as well). Finally, note that campaign books in general are extremely rare, and the best of them have often sold for hundreds of dollars, and in the case of the very finest, thousands of dollars!

Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this Spanish campaign book!

Condition: good to very good. The 20 pages at the center of the book have come loose from the staples, but it has no real effect on the book, and otherwise, the book has only some faint brown stains on the first and last interior pages (extremely common in books of this nature).
