An Original Vintage Esquire Calendar Portfolio (measures 10 1/2" x 13 3/4" [27 x 35 cm]; contains 12 color prints; see below for more) (Learn More) Alberto Vargas was a Peruvian artist from the 1920s to the 1980s. In the 1940s, he created a sexy "centerfold" for each issue of Esquire Magazine (they would fold out, and Hugh Hefner borrowed the idea in the 1950s for his Playboy Magazine, except he used photos instead of artwork), and his pin-up art was frequently used as "nose art" for many military aircraft during World War II. Vargas is often considered one of the most famous of the pin-up artists, and his paintings have sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars. He is often reputed to have worked as a poster artist on films such as Ziegfeld Follies, and The Sin of Nora Moran (which is frequently named as one of the greatest posters ever made). He passed away in 1982 at the age of 86. Artist: Alberto Vargas Important Added Info: Note that Esquire sold Vargas calendars for many years in the 1940s. Each was spiral-bound with a printed envelope. However, they also sold this deluxe edition (at least in 1946), which is called the "Varga Portfolio", and it has hard covers with an image of a sexy girl on the front and back, and an inset of Vargas drawing on the front. The inside front cover has 12 sexy Vargas drawings with tiny month calendars, and the inside back cover has places to add "birthdays", "gifts to send" and "favorite numbers". There is a pocket in the inside back cover which holds the 12 individual calendar pages for that year. Condition: good to very good. The hard covers are in pretty nice condition, except for the top and right of the front cover, and the inside back cover, all of which have some light staining, and there is some wear down the edge of the back cover. A few of the calendar pages have some slight darkening around the edges. The January calendar page, which was on top of the others, has much light staining in all the white background areas.
