An Unfolded French Travel Poster (measures 24" x 39 1/4" [61 x 100 cm]) (Learn More) The Compagnie Generale Transatlantique (typically known overseas as the French Line or Transat) was a French shipping company which was founded in 1855 by the brothers Emile and Issac Pereire under the name Compagnie Generale Maritime. The company was entrusted by the French government to transport mail to North America, and in 1861, the name of the company was changed to Compagnie Generale Transatlantique. After a period of trials and errors in the late 19th century, the company gained fame in the 1910s and 1930s with its prestigious ocean liners such as SS Paris, SS Ile de France, and especially SS Normandie. Contrary to what its name suggests, the company was not content with operating just in the North Atlantic route. It also offered service to Central America and even, for a time, the Pacific coast. From the beginning of the 20th century, it offered crossings between Marseille and Algiers, creating a tourist circuit in North Africa in the 1920s. In the 1930s, the company briefly became involved in aviation through Air France Translatlantique. Other than operating ocean liners, the company also had a significant fleet of freighters. Artist: Paul Colin Important Added Info: Note that this poster closely resembles the 1935 poster but that poster has a few slight differences and it lacks printer information at lower right. This particular poster likely dates from the late 1950s or more likely 1960s (it has printer information at lower right and the paper it is printed on is from this later time period). It is possible that it was made to be used commercially or that it was intended to be displayed as a travel poster, but we cannot be 100% certain. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Condition: good to very good. The poster has some creases and tiny tears along portions of the left edge (see our image). They are not very noticeable or distracting from a reasonable viewing distance and it is otherwise in pretty nice condition. Learn More about condition grades
