Date Sold 6/23/2019Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. 5 Original Vintage Stereoscopic Slides (each of the 5 slides measures 3.25" by 4.5") (Learn More) The Phantom of the Opera, the classic 1925 Rupert Julian Universal silent Paris France opera house murder mystery horror thriller ("Carl Laemmle presents Gaston Leroux's magnificent story of Parisian gaiety and intrigue"; "Weird! Wild! Wonderful!"; from the novel by Gaston Leroux, which was published in a serialized format in 1909 and 1910) starring Lon Chaney Sr. (in the title role as Erik, The Phantom), Norman Kerry (as Vicomte Raoul de Chagny), Mary Philbin (as Christine Daae), Arthur Edmund Carewe (as Ledoux), Gibson Gowland (as Simon Buquet), Carla Laemmle (uncredited as one of the ballerinas), Alexander Bevani, and "5000 others". Note that this movie was remade in 1943 with Claude Rains as the Phantom and Susannah Foster as Christine. In 1986, Andrew Lloyd Webber made a musical stage play version, which is perhaps the most successful stage play of all time, and is still running on Broadway! In 2004, Webber's musical was made into a movie, with Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum. Also note that as they did with many of their major productions at this time, Universal created two completely different sets of lobby cards, with different designs and two title cards, so there are sixteen first release cards, two sets of eight. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this auction is for five Stereoscopic Slides from Phantom of the Opera. They are numbered on the back and have descriptions of the scene on front. We are not offering a viewer for these slides in this auction, but we have a separate auction where we are auctioning a viewer, plus 19 of the 20 The Hunchback of Notre Dame slides. Slides like this were one of the earliest versions of "3D", because when you looked at these slides in the viewer they appeared to be three dimensional. We have seen where an auction company reported selling the viewer that goes with these slides and ten of the slides from The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and ten slides from Phantom of the Opera, and they reported that those sold for $3,824. We found another auction that reported a different viewer with ten Phantom of the Opera slides and they reported those sold for $2,194.75. The winner of this auction will receive the five Stereoscopic Slides from Phantom of the Opera. Remember that we also are auctioning in a separate auction a viewer for these slides, plus 19 Hunchback slides, but remember that THIS auction is solely for these five slides and NOT for a viewer. This is the very first time we have auctioned any of the slides from this movie! Condition: very good to fine. The slides are in excellent condition (see our images of the front and back of each slide). Learn More about condition grades
