A Vintage French Art Portfolio (measures 9 3/4" x 12 1/2" [25 x 32 cm]; contains 12 art prints) (Learn More)

The Circus, the 1953 French illustrated book ("Thirty-nine crayon drawings in color") featuring art by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was a French painter and illustrator known for elegant and provocative images of Paris. He was considered one of the greatest painters of the Post-Impressionist period. Some of his works include: The Marble Polisher, At the Moulin Rouge, Portrait of Gabrielle, and Le Coucher. Note that Toulouse-Lautrec suffered from congenital defects (possibly caused by inbreeding), and after childhood injuries, his legs stopped growing. He was only 4'8" tall as an adult!
Important Added Info: Note that the first interior page mentions, "One Thousand Five Hundred copies numbered from 1 to 1,500. In addition there has been printed: 20 copies on Imperial Japan Paper numbered I to XX. 50 copies on Special Velin Paper numbered XXI to LXX. NUMBER 1279." Also, note that this item (and seven other items, which also have this on their auction) were acquired by our consignor from the Liza Minelli Auction at Profiles in History. It was the personal property of Ms Minelli's father, Vincente, which Liza acquired after his passing. Our consignor does not have a Certificate of Authenticity (because the item was in a group lot) but we are certain it was Ms Minelli's father's personal property. Also, note that this portfolio consists of 12 loose images that have full-page images of Lautrec crayon drawings. There is a blank page and a title page written in French, and there is an 8-page portfolio that holds the loose pages. Apparently, there were originally 39 full-page images in the French edition, but only 12 are present here, so surely 27 are missing. The inner pages were printed in France and the outer 8-page portfolio was printed in New York City, and is the "English edition" of this portfolio. This edition was limited to 1,500 numbered copies, and this one is numbered 1,279 within the printing on the first interior page. The interior loose page has an embossed stamp for Vincente Minnelli, so it was obviously his personal copy. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

Condition: good. Only 12 of the 39 drawings are present, plus the additional pages described above.
