An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Chinese Export Movie Poster (measures 29 1/2" x 42" [75 x 107 cm]) (Learn More)

The Price of Infidelity, the 1920s Chinese romantic marriage melodrama produced by the Great Wall Film Co. Note that the Great Wall Film Company was one of the first Chinese film production companies based in Shanghai, China, in the 1920s, starting in 1924, so this poster would date from that date or after. We were unable to find out any information about this movie. If anyone knows more about this movie, please e-mail us and we will post it here.
If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that ANY movie paper from this movie is incredibly rare. We have never auctioned even a single movie paper item from this movie until we received this Chinese poster, which is a "country of origin" poster for this Chinese movie (and it is an export poster, designed for use in English speaking countries, which is likely the only reason it survived, because it was sent from China to one of those countries)! Also note that Chinese posters of any sort from before 1960 are virtually unknown (at least in the western world)! We have only previously auctioned a couple of posters that might possibly be Chinese from the 1940s and 1950s, and never before one that appeared to be from the 1930s or 1920s (as this one almost surely is). Given its historic value, we would hope that the new owner of this poster will have it properly restored!

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair. It is difficult to say what condition this poster was in prior to being backed, because it acquired a great deal of damage after it was backed. It appears that someone attached it to thin linen, and then attached it to a stretcher, like an original painting, and there is much paper loss down the left and right borders, and some tears and paper loss in the top and bottom, but mostly in the blank borders on all four sides. There are many creases scattered throughout the poster, and there is small paper loss in the upper middle and larger paper loss in the upper right, with pinholes in the bottom corners. Obviously, this poster can be removed from the old linen and properly backed and restored, but bear all of the above in mind before bidding on it.
