I Was a Criminal, the 1945 Richard Oswald mistaken identity crime melodrama ("I was doomed to a Hell on Earth! They hunted me... hounded me... because I dared fight to live!"; "based on the world famous story 'The Captain of Kopenick'"; about a real life 1906 incident where a petty thief in Germany wanted to travel to his home town, but he couldn't get the visa necessary, so he came up with the wild idea of impersonating the German official who could grant the visa, so that he could "give one to himself"!; but the story got stranger when he still couldn't get the visa, but the people in the town gave him a lot of money to take to Germany with him!; he was arrested and put on trial, but the whole matter made Germany look ridiculous, and he was let off with a light sentence) starring Albert Basserman, Mary Brian, Eric Blore, Herman Bing, and Luis Alberni. Note that the source story for this movie was first made into a movie called "Der Hauptman von Koepenick" (The Captain from Kopenick) in 1926, and was then made into a play in 1931 that had a movie version as well. This movie was completed in 1941, under the title of "Passport to Heaven", but it was not released in the U.S., likely because it was seen as having a sympathetic German "hero". It was finally released in 1945, at the end of the war, under the title "I Was a Criminal", with the "German" angle downplayed in the advertising. Everyone who has seen this movie thinks it is excellent, and surely it deserves to be restored and re-released!
