A Linenbacked Italian Special Poster (measures 39" x 54 3/4" [99 x 139 cm]) (Learn More)

Zolfi Almagia (literally translates to "Almagia Sulfite"), the 1950 Italian reprint of a 1909 Italian advertising poster encouraging wineries to purchase sulfite from the Almagia refinery in Ravenna (the head office was in Rome). Sulfites are commonly introduced to wines in order to arrest fermentation at a desired time, and may also be added as preservatives to prevent spoilage and oxidation at several stages of the winemaking. It protects wine from not only oxidation, but also from bacteria, and without sulfites, grape juice would quickly turn to vinegar. Note that this poster features Adolfo Hohenstein artwork of a centaur holding a faun who is blowing sulfur dust onto grapes
Artist: Adolfo Hohenstein
Important Added Info:

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster was never folded. It had some creases and scuffs scattered throughout. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. After the poster was backed, it was roughly handled, and it acquired a long diagonal crease in the bottom left corner, running across the top of the artist's signature. It is not very distracting, but please consider this before placing a bid on this poster.
