A Linenbacked Italian Advertising Poster (measures 52" x 73 1/2" [132 x 187 cm]) (Learn More)

James Hopps & Son, the 1920s Italian liquor alcohol advertising poster promoting the purchase of Marsala wine. Marsala wine was traditionally used as an aperitif between the first and second courses of a meal. Note that this poster features great artwork of a woman riding a four-horse chariot on top of the earth while holding a bottle of the product in the air.
If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare poster! We have never auctioned one in all our years of auctioning, although we have auctioned a similar poster that was much smaller.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair to good. The poster had small tears and small areas of paper loss on parts of some folds, with oval paper loss in the lower right of the image, in the middle of the horse second from the right. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was likely pretty well backed when it was first backed, but it was not glued to the linen adequately, and it is now "lifting" from the linen in the area where the two sections join, and the restoration of the above paper loss is also separating and much more noticeable. There are also creases in the bottom of the poster, but in the poster itself and the linen backing. Please read the above carefully and look at our super-sized image before placing a bid on this poster.
