A Vintage Hardcover Book (measures 5 1/4" x 7 3/4" [13 x 20 cm]; 280 pages) (Learn More) The Public Enemy, the classic 1931 William A. Wellman family relationship romantic love triangle gangster organized crime melodrama ("A story that will startle the entire world"; "The cold-blooded hot-head whose guns roared across the 'decade of death'!") ("with a huge cast including") starring James Cagney (as Tom Powers), Jean Harlow (as Gwen Allen), Edward Woods (as Matt Doyle), Joan Blondell (as Mamie), Beryl Mercer (as Ma Powers), Donald Cook (as Mike Powers), Leslie Fenton (as Nails Nathan), Murray Kinnell (as Putty Nose), Mae Clarke (uncredited, as Kitty, the girl who Cagney hits in the face with a grapefruit!), Frankie Darro (as James Cagney's best friend, when both were boys), and Robert Emmett O'Connor (as Paddy Ryan). Note that Edward Woods was originally cast as the lead in this movie, and James Cagney was to play his friend, but after a couple of days of filming, director William Wellman had the two actors switch roles, and Cagney became a super star, and Woods only made a total of 13 movies before retiring in 1938! Important Added Info: Note that this is the Grosset & Dunlap photoplay edition (one of a collection of such books we are auctioning in this set of auctions). Here are some more details about these books: Grosset & Dunlap was a publisher that made a deal with all the studios in the 1910s to publish "movie edition" hardcovers of novels that were currently adapted into movies (there were also some by other publishers, but Grosset & Dunlap printed the lion's share of these). They would re-publish the original novel as the movie came out (or soon after), and they would put a dust jacket on the book that showed the stars of the movie, and they would include several pages of images from the movie scattered in the book. These books were incredibly popular in the 1920s and 1930s. Note that we have pictured the front cover, the title page, and the interior page that shows the publishing information, and one or more interior 2-page spreads. The example of this book offered here does not have its dust jacket. Condition: good to very good. Learn More about condition grades
