A 1963 Re-Release Vintage Theatrical Folded One-Sheet Movie Poster (measures 27" x 41") (Learn More)

West Side Story, the classic 1961 Robert Wise & Jerome Robbins (winners of the Best Director Academy Award for this film) New York City romantic dance musical ("The screen achieves one of the great entertainments in the history of motion pictures"; "'Best Picture' Winner of 10 Academy Awards 1961"; "Based upon the stage play produced by Robert E. Griffith and Harold S. Prince" winner of the Best Picture Academy Award; with a sentimental script by Ernest Lehman, which borrows heavily from "Romeo & Juliet"; based on a book by Arthur Laurents) starring Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Russ Tamblyn, Rita Moreno (winner of the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film), and George Chakiris (winner of the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film). The wonderful music was by Leonard Bernstein and the equally wonderful lyrics were by Stephen Sondheim. Note that Natalie Wood's singing was dubbed by Marni Nixon (who had also dubbed The King and I and The Sound of Music), and Richard Beymer's singing was dubbed as well. Recordings exist of some of Natalie Wood's singing, and she absolutely would have been fine, but Hollywood demands perfection!

Important Added Info: Note that we have not seen this particular poster before! Apparently, this classic musical has a REALLY strange poster history, one that could probably fill a book with all its complexities! Here is what we DO know: In 1961, there was an ad campaign with art against an orange background. In early 1962, the movie won the Best Picture Academy Award. We have never sold a U.S. one-sheet from 1962 with the "Best Picture" credited on it (making this the incredibly unusual situation that the "pre-Awards" poster is far more common than the "post-Awards" poster!). We HAVE sold an insert with a 1962 NSS number that has a completely different design, and credits all the awards won, and we have also sold an insert with a 1961 NSS number which credits the awards won (and since the awards were not won until 1962, the poster MUST have been printed in 1962, but they neglected to change the NSS number). NOW, we have our very first "post-Awards" one-sheet! This poster has a 1961 NSS number, but has a 1963 litho number. It has a "Best Picture" block in the top left corner printed within the poster. They must have taken the original plates of the one-sheet, added the "Best Picture" block, and changed the litho number, and either forgot to change the NSS number, or purposely did not change it, and printed more posters. The copyright in the bottom left corner says 1961, but of course, that could just refer to the year the movie was made. If anyone reading this has a "post-Awards" West Side Story one-sheet with a 1961, 1962, or 1963 NSS and/or litho number, please let us know, so we can increase our knowledge of this very unusual poster printing situation! Also, Note that the classic art for this classic movie poster has long and often been misidentified as being by Saul Bass, but it is actually by Joseph Caroff!
