Griffith's The Birth of a Nation (also released in some parts of the U.S. as "The Clansman", although not solely in the South as one might think), the classic historic 1915 D.W. Griffith silent Civil War birth-of-the-Ku-Klux-Klan historical action adventure melodrama ("Lincoln's assassinations. The fatal blow that robbed the South of its best friend"; "The supreme picture of all time."; "Mightiest spectacle ever produced"; "D.W. Griffith's stupendous motion picture production of Thomas Dixon's famous story 'The Clansman'"; "Employing the services of 18,000 people accompanied by the symphony orchestra of 40"; "Founded on Thomas Dixon's story 'The Clansman'"; made just 50 years after the end of the Civil War, it begins with Lincoln's assassination, and shows the devastation of the South afterwards, and portrays the forming of the Ku Klux Klan as the only way for Southerners to fight back against the carpetbaggers from the North!) starring Lillian Gish, Mae Marsh, Henry B. Walthall (distinguished silent actor best remembered as the star of this film), Elmo Lincoln, Miriam Cooper, Mary Alden, Joseph Henabery (as President Abraham Lincoln), Donald Crisp (as General Grant), Howard Gaye (as General Lee), and Raoul Walsh (as John Wilkes Booth). Note that this movie was very controversial for its sympathetic portrayal of white southerners and its stereotypical portrayal of black African Americans, but no one can deny it was the first great movie, and is a major landmark in American cinema. Prior to the release of this movie, almost all movie theaters showed a series of one-reel shorts, and charged 5 cents admission. D.W. Griffith charged $2 admission to see this single feature-length movie, and it was a huge success, which convinced all other filmmakers to begin making feature films as well. But on the first interior page it says "Bot [sic!] November 6, 1915", and all of the references on the exterior and interior of the dust jacket are to books from the early 1910s, so we would think this book surely IS from 1915! Note that this is the first Grosset & Dunlap photoplay edition from 1915 in its original dust jacket. In our 26 years of auctioning, we have previously auctioned around a dozen hardcover movie edition books (most from Grosset & Dunlap). Now, we have been consigned an amazing collection of 37 hardcover movie edition books, and we are auctioning all of them in this set of auctions! All of them have the original dust jackets, and since we know that the condition of the dust jackets are very important on the value of these, we have photographed the entire dust jacket opened up (both sides), which will surely let you accurately gauge the condition of each book! Here are some more details about these books: Grosset & Dunlap was a publisher that made a deal with all the studios in the 1910s to publish "movie edition" hardcovers of novels that were currently adapted into movies (there were also some by other publishers, but Grosset & Dunlap printed the lion's share of these). They would re-publish the original novel as the movie came out (or soon after), and they would put a dust jacket on the book that showed the stars of the movie, and they would include several pages of images from the movie scattered in the book. These books were incredibly popular in the 1920s and 1930s, and they are quite collectible, especially if they still have the original dust jacket! Note that we have pictured the front cover, the title page, and the interior page that shows the publishing information, and one or more interior 2-page spreads. As noted above, we have also pictured the dust jacket entirely opened and we have pictured the inside of the entire dust jacket, since we know collectors value that jacket and want to see its exact condition. Condition: fair. There is paper loss at the top and bottom of the dust jacket. The final interior page is loose and the hardcover binding is mostly separated from the spine (the front cover is still attached to the spine, but not the back cover). Someone glued pictures of actresses from the movie to the inside front and back covers (see our images). We have pictured the dust jacket entirely opened and we have pictured the inside of the entire dust jacket. We have also pictured the front cover, the title page, and the interior page that shows the publishing information, and one or more interior 2-page spreads, all of which should greatly help you judge the exact condition of this book!
