An Unfolded German Art Exhibition Poster (measures 27 1/2" x 39 1/2" [70 x 100 cm]) (Learn More) Kunsthaus Tacheles (literally translates to "Art House Tacheles") was an art center in Berlin, Germany. Huge, colorful graffiti-style murals are painted on the exterior walls, and modern art sculptures are featured inside. The building housed an artists collective from 1990 until 2012. Originally called Friedrichsstadtpassagen, it was built in 1907/1908 as a department store in the Jewish quarter of Berlin, next to a synagogue. During World War II (WWII) it served as a Nazi prison for a short while, and under East German authorities, it was later partially demolished. After the Berlin Wall had come down in 1989, it was taken over by squatters/artists, who called it Tacheles (Yiddish for "straight talking"), and the building contained studios, workshops, a nightclub, and a cinema. Outside, the garden featured an open-air exhibition of metal sculptures as well as galleries and studios for sculptors and painters. In 2012, the last artists left peacefully, after pressure from the new owner. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that silkscreen (also known as screen printing) is a printing technique whereby a mesh is used to transfer ink onto a poster. Only one color is printed at a time, so several screens must be used to produce a multicolored design, and it is a laborious technique because it is traditionally all done by hand. Because of the rich thickness of the layer of color on the paper and the resulting depth and brilliance achieved through silkscreen printing, this technique was preferred by many artists throughout many cultures and periods. Condition: very good to fine. The poster is printed on a thick stock and is in pretty nice condition. Learn More about condition grades
