An Unfolded German Special Poster (measures 17" x 24 1/4" [43 x 62 cm]) (Learn More) Sappho Und Rosakulturtage Koln '87 (literally translates to "Sappho And Rosaculture Days Cologne '87"), the 1987 German poster promoting a gathering to take place from March 20th to May 4th. Note that this poster features many pink triangles, which have been a symbol for various LGBTQ identities, initially intended as a badge of shame, but later reclaimed as a positive symbol of self-identity. In Nazi Germany in the 1930s and 1940s, it began as one of the Nazi concentration camp badges, distinguishing those imprisoned because they had been identified by authorities as homosexual men, a category that also included bisexual men and transgender women. In the 1970s, it was revived as a symbol of protest against homophobia, and has since been adopted by the larger LGBTQ community as a popular symbol of LGBTQ pride and the LGBTQ rights movement. The association of the color pink with being gay is a fairly modern cultural phenomenon. There is an idea that pink is feminine and gay men are feminine therefore pink equates to gay. However, the gay rights movement has appropriated what was meant as an insult and made pink a gay color. The idea that pink is for girls and blue is for boys is somewhere in the region of 100 years old. In fact, pink was thought of as a vibrant "male" color in the past, being a watered-down red; whereas blue was thought of as pretty and effeminate.
