Date Sold 2/12/2017Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical 7 3/4" x 9 3/4" [20 x 25 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Das Kabinett des Doktor Caligari (released in the U.S. in 1921 and in England in 1924 as "The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari"), the 1920 Robert Wiene German expressionism silent horror thriller ("A thrilling fantastic photo-play"; about a man who sleepwalks in a disturbing world and there is a mysterious Dr. Caligari who seems to be his arch enemy!) starring Werner Krauss (in the title role as Doctor Caligari), Conrad Veidt (as Cesare, the somnambulist), Friedrich Feher, Lil Dagover, and Hans Heinrich von Twardowski. Note that this movie is considered by many to be the first major horror movie ever. Much of the movie takes place within the dreams of the sleepwalker, and the sets are distorted to reflect his distorted mind (they were made of paper and the shadows were painted on to the paper!) NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this still has a negative image on it, which was clearly done intentionally! We imagine this was done to help convey the surreal nature of the movie. It certainly is VERY unusual, and very striking. Note that we know that this classic German movies was first released in Germany in February of 1920. It was given a major release in the U.S. by Goldwyn in 1921. But this still would seem to be potentially from an earlier U.S. release that would have occurred between the two. We say this because it has 1920 on it, which is the German release year, not the Goldwyn release year, and it has an UFA symbol in the lower left, and not a Goldwyn credit. But it is clearly not a German still, because it does not have an embossed stamp, it is not on heavy paper, and it has the title written in English. Another possibility is that this still is from the first English release, which may have occurred in 1920, but we were unable to determine when the first English release was! So unless there was an earlier English release, then it seems quite likely the movie had some limited release in the U.S. in 1920, prior to the Goldwyn release. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Also note that this still measures 7 3/4" x 9 3/4" [20 x 25 cm], but it has not been trimmed. Condition: good. The still is lightly rippled due to snipes on the back. There is a piece of clear tape in each corner at a diagonal, and there was tiny paper loss under the tape in three corners (see our images).
