A Folded Cuban Special Poster (measures 14" x 21 1/4" [36 x 54 cm]) (Learn More)

Solidarity with the African American People, the 1968 Cuban OSPAAAL poster promoting August 18th, with the title phrase in several languages, and featuring a design by Lazaro Abreu & art by Emory Douglas of three men with rifles. Emory Douglas worked as the Minister of Culture for the Black Panther Party from 1967 until the Party disbanded in the 1980s. His graphic art was featured in most issues of the newspaper The Black Panther, and as the art director, designer, and main illustrator, Douglas created images that became icons, representing black African American struggles during the 1960s and 1970s. OSPAAAL (The Organization of Solidarity with the People of Asia, Africa and Latin America) is a Cuban political movement with the stated purpose of promoting the causes of socialism and communism in the Third World, fighting globalization, imperialism, neoliberalism and defending human rights. OSPAAAL was founded in Havana in January 1966, after the Tricontinental Conference, a meeting of leftist delegates from several nations. Many of the posters created by OSPAAAL featured multiple languages so they could be used for international audiences, and they often came in copies of OSPAAAL's Tricontinental magazine. The U.S. embargo of Cuba and the fall of the Soviet Union eventually caused considerable difficulty in poster production, and it wasn't until the 2000s that production was able to increase again.
