An Original Vintage Theatrical Danish Movie Program (measures 5 3/4" x 8" [15 x 20 cm]; 22 pages) (Learn More) Shall We Dance, the classic 1937 Mark Sandrich romantic dancing musical comedy ("Control yourself! ...they're coming on skates!"; "Music by George Gershwin"; "Lyrics by Ira Gershwin"; about a male ballet dancer and a female musical comedy star who have a pretend romance in order to gain publicity, but of course, they fall in love for real!) starring Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Edward Everett Horton, Eric Blore, Jerome Cowan, Ketti Gallian, William Brisbane, Harriet Hoctor, and Mantan Moreland. Note that this is the Astaire & Rogers movie where they dance together on roller skates! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Erik Frederiksen Important Added Info: Note that this is FAR more elaborate than most Danish programs! It has 22 pages, and it includes a 1-page tribute to George Gershwin, who passed away in 1937, with a photo of him, and it also has photos from the movie. It has many more pages than regular programs, and it has lyrics to six of the songs, in both English and Danish! Also note that most Danish programs from after around 1948 measured approximately 4 3/4" x 6". However, most of the ones from before that time were a larger size (usually around 5 3/4" x 8") and usually had a lot more pages than those from after 1948 (however, some of the ones made during World War II are a smaller size and have few pages, no doubt due to paper shortages). In addition, most of the "pre-War" Danish programs are FAR more rare than programs from after World War II, no doubt because they were destroyed during the huge paper shortages during World War II. Note that the art on the cover of this Danish program is signed "Erik F.". The artist's full name is Erik Frederiksen, and we have been told by a Danish poster expert that he not only drew movie posters in Denmark in the 1930s but he also drew travel posters. We had never seen any art by this artist prior to discovery of a group of Danish posters we auctioned in 2009, and it appears that few Danish collectors or dealers had seen them either, because all of the posters sold for quite high prices, and there was much competitive bidding for each one! Certainly he must be regarded as one of the premier poster artists of the 1930s, but he is not known today, likely because of the extreme scarcity of his posters.
