An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Spartacus, the classic 1960 Stanley Kubrick sword-and-sandal Ancient Wars gladiator sports action adventure epic ("Winner of 4 Academy Awards!"; "They trained him to kill for their pleasure... But they trained him a little too well..."; "A mighty motion picture!"; "Based on the novel by Howard Fast"; written by Dalton Trumbo) starring Kirk Douglas (in the title role as Spartacus), Laurence Olivier (as Crassus, who liked both oysters and snails, or was it truffles and artichokes?), Jean Simmons, Charles Laughton (as Gracchus), Peter Ustinov (winner of the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film), Woody Strode (as Draba), Tony Curtis ("as Antoninus"), John Gavin (as Julius Caesar), Charles McGraw (as the gladiator trainer), and Herbert Lom. Note that Kirk Douglas was the producer of this movie and originally Anthony Mann was directing. But three weeks into filming, Douglas fired Mann and replaced him with Stanley Kubrick, who then fired Sabine Bethmann, who had been the female lead, and replaced her with Jean Simmons! Also note that Dalton Trumbo had been blacklisted during the HUAAC hearings in the early 1950s, and he was still blacklisted at this time, so he was not going to receive screen credit. Kubrick heard this and wanted to be given the screenwriter credit (since someone had to be credited), but producer Douglas courageously insisted on Trumbo receiving the credit on screen, which effectively ended the blacklist! Important Added Info: Note that this lobby card is from a special collection of 41 scene lobby cards, all of which are from Laurence Olivier movies (and each is in its own auction)! The collector who assembled this collection spent DECADES searching out scene cards from as many of Laurence Olivier's movies as he could find, and he always tried to find the best scene in the best condition, and he mostly found first release cards. 40 of the 41 cards show Olivier (most of them an excellent image of him). The one exception is the card from THE YELLOW TICKET, which does not show Olivier (it is extremely early in his career, and it is not clear how many cards, if any, he is shown on). This is a rare opportunity to acquire one or more scene cards of Laurence Olivier, who many have called the finest actor of all time! Condition: very good. The card was "starch backed", which means that it was moistened with a special starch solution, attached to a backing, allowed to dry, and then the card had touch up while it was backed, and afterward, the backing was removed. This particular card had pinholes and some tape stains in the borders. The card looks fantastic, and it has had truly minor touch up, and best of all, it still completely looks and feels like an unrestored lobby card! Learn More about condition grades
