An Undated (probably 1950) Re-Release Theatrical Folded German "A1" Movie Poster (measures 23" x 33" [58 x 84 cm]) (Learn More) Der Blaue Engel (simultaneously released in the U.S. as "The Blue Angel", there were English language and German language versions), the classic 1930 Josef von Sternberg German tragic romantic musical melodrama (about a well respected college professor who falls for a night club singer, and she is thrilled to have such an illustrious suitor, but he throws his career away to marry her, with disastrous consequences; from the novel by Heinrich Mann) starring Emil Jannings (as Professor Immanuel Rath), Marlene Dietrich (as Lola Lola), Kurt Gerron, Rosa Valetti, Hans Albers, and Reinhold Bernt. Note that we do not know if there are any differences in the cast between the German language and the English language version (we know that most of the actors were German, but that they performed the English language version themselves in heavily accented English). If anyone knows of any differences between the two versions of this movie, please e-mail us and we will post it here. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Bonne Important Added Info: Note that this is a "country of origin" poster for this German movie. It is the earliest German re-release we have auctioned, and we know that the chances of us ever auctioning a first release German poster are slim and none!
UPDATED 09/16/2016: Note that a knowledgeable collector narrowed down the re-release date of this poster to 1950, and we have updated the auction accordingly. Condition: poor to fair. This poster has a very unusual defect. It was re-used in France, and they wanted it to have the French title of "L'ange bleu" instead of "Der blaue engel". Someone cut out most of the original title area, and then they apparently painted over the letters so that they could change it into the French title, and then they glued it back into the poster by putting brown paper on the back of that area and then gluing the pieces onto the brown paper, and then they painted in some areas to make the new title read correctly (including a "L'" in front of "ANGE"). The image area was left alone, but certainly this is really significant and major "restoration", so do not bid on this poster unless you can accept this major defect. One could have further restoration performed, but that would be costly and involve a massive amount of work. Learn More about condition grades
